Built from the ground up.
Grounded in what works.
After 25 years founding, scaling and leading social enterprises, Paul McColgan started Sustainable Growth Partnership with a single purpose — to help leaders like you build organisations that are financially resilient, purpose-driven and led well.
Started in housing. Built in communities. Grounded in purpose.
I started my career working in housing and homelessness in Scotland in the mid-1990s. I was struck early by the gap between the ambition of the organisations doing this work and the structures — financial, operational, cultural — that were supposed to support it. That gap was costing people.
Over the next two decades, I founded and led organisations that tried to close it. Community Renewal Group grew to deliver over £30m in services across 20 neighbourhoods. Caledonia Cremation became Scotland’s first not-for-profit funeral director. Each one taught me something different about what makes organisations thrive — and what makes them crack under pressure.
I’m a certified master coach with qualifications from FocalPoint International, The Tavistock Institute and The Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I’ve worked internationally, taught on MBA programmes and supported over 60 charitable organisations to build more sustainable models. In 2019 I was voted Social Enterprise Champion of Scotland.
I started SGP because I kept seeing the same patterns — brilliant leaders, important missions, and organisations stuck in survival mode. Not because the people weren’t good enough, but because they didn’t have the right support. That’s what we’re here to change.
How we think about growth
Sustainable growth is not growth for growth’s sake. These are the beliefs that shape every piece of work we do.
Profit supports purpose
Financial sustainability is not in tension with mission — it’s what protects it. Organisations that are financially strong can do more of what matters.
Growth should not cost wellbeing
Leaders cannot sustain their organisations if they’re running on empty. Peer connection, resilience and mutual support matter as much as strategy. We work on the person as much as the plan.
Clarity reduces overwhelm
Most of the pressure leaders feel comes from too many competing priorities. When you’re clear on what matters most, everything else becomes easier to manage.
“When leaders thrive, their organisations thrive — and communities flourish.”
Trusted by organisations across the UK
We work with charities, social enterprises and purpose-led organisations on strategy, leadership, culture and growth.
